Hosting a Dawat: How Much Karahi Per Person?

The arithmetic of feeding guests well without a fridge full of leftovers.

· 5 min read

The basic ratio

A kilogram of raw bone-in mutton or chicken, once cooked into karahi, comfortably feeds three to four adults when it is the main dish and there is naan and a rice dish on the table. If karahi is the only hot dish, count three people per kilo.

Children under ten count as half. Guests who will also be eating BBQ count as two-thirds.

A worked example for twelve guests

Twelve adults with BBQ on the side: 12 × two-thirds = 8 'karahi eaters', so roughly two to three kilos across two karahis, say one mutton and one chicken. Add one tray of biryani or pulao, a mutton handi for the mild eaters, and bread for everyone.

Order one more portion than the maths says. Running out is a bigger problem than leftovers.

Order so it travels well

Karahi reheats better than BBQ. If some guests are late, keep the karahi covered and collect the BBQ as close to serving time as you can. Our two-price dishes come in different portions; confirm which portion feeds how many when you order.
